International Car Shows

Posted by admin under Automotive

International car shows offer car manufacturers a platform for showcasing their latest cars to an international audience. All the international car shows held all over the world serve as a common platform for manufacturers to get together, share knowledge and expertise, and announce their plans to an eager world audience.

There are many international car shows that have become extremely important and prestigious over the years. Many of these international car shows are held in the United States. Some of these shows include the Chicago Auto Show, Greater Los Angeles Auto Show, Greater Minneapolis and Saint Paul International Auto Show, the New York International Auto Show, the North American International Auto Show, the Seattle International Auto Show, the South Florida Auto Show, and the Washington Auto Show.

In these shows, many of the cars that have captured the imagination of the world are unveiled for the world to see. This also becomes the place where dealers from the world over come together and have a live talk with the manufacturers. Negotiations take place during the days of the show and agreements worth millions of dollars are signed by various manufacturers with international dealers.

Additionally, these international car shows put the city on the international car map. Such shows are revered the world over, and people mark their calendar every year to visit their favorite international car shows.

The dynamics of car shows over the many decades when car shows first began has changed. Not only existing and new cars are shown, but also concept cars that never see the commercial light of day and futuristic cars are also showcased for the general public and international media to see and write about. This kind of convention of many diverse technologies in car manufacturing and development has done a great deal to promote the development of new technology and architecture for better cars the world over.

While it is a great achievement to pass your Driving Test first time it is only the beginning of a life long process and does not confer immortality rights! So many young drivers are blissfully unaware of what is facing them in the first few years of Driving after passing the Driving Test.

This time is generally recognised as the most dangerous in a driver’s career since the euphoria of passing the Driving Test, whether first time or not, seems to completely blur the reality of driving in today’s environment. Today’s Driving Environment is very different to that of twenty five years ago or in Ireland’s case just ten years ago when roads were quieter and there were fewer untrained Learner Drivers on the road.

Today in 2006 not only do we have a huge increase in the number of vehicles on the road but an exponential increase of Learner Drivers who in the case of Ireland are cavorting merrily (and not so merrily!) around the countryside with little or no skills to back them up. A booming economy with plenty of jobs for everyone has placed cars within the reach of every 20 year old and some even younger drivers. Not for long, however, will this free for all continue, since the newly established Road Safety Authority has come out of the Kennel in the back yard and is beginning to bark. Bark it must do because the more noise that is made, the sooner the whole Motoring public will sit up and take notice.

What has the general motoring public got to do with Learner Drivers and their very obvious poor skills base you might ask? Since each generation of new drivers gets the first exposure to Driving and Road Sense in a Parent’s car, at a very early age, then it seems obvious that Parents can play a very key role in instilling good road safety skills.

Most Drivers are Parents or will be at some stage and so there is a strong link between the Driving Skills of Parents and those of their children. Setting a strong example from the first day a child is strapped into the car seat is an essential part of the long slow educational process. This will ensure that ultimately a new Driver goes out into the world with some good skills and an understanding of what is involved in owning and running a car.

In a nutshell Driver Education begins when we are in nappies and continues throughout life. The ability to pass the Driving Test first time is definitely influenced by the early years in your Parent’s car and the example they set for you. Bad driving habits and behaviour are easily noticed by young passengers and since the kids of today seldom go more than a few hours without being transported several times at least, they are constantly exposed to driver behaviour be it good or bad!

It may seem a bit of a chore to start training a child at such a young age but you can do it in stages and integrate the lessons to be learnt on a gradual basis. Keeping the car tidy is a good start and is no different to instilling a sense of pride in your nice tidy bedroom. As we all know keeping bedrooms tidy is tiresome but well worth it in the end.
Passing the Driving Test First time can begin with your first time in the car but saving your life and that of another Driver can also begin at this time! Strange but True! Could it be worth the effort?

Whiplash - How You Get It and How to Prevent It

Posted by admin under Automotive

290,607 road users were killed or injured in the UK in 2003, 188,342 of those were the drivers or passengers in cars (Department for Transport). With the amount of cars on our roads multiplying by the year it is not surprising that accidents are frequent and that injuries such as whiplash affect so many people. Around 20% of rear end accidents result in a whiplash injury.

The incidence of neck injury to front seat passengers is higher (16 per cent) than for rear seat passengers (10 per cent) in rear end collisions, and front-seat passengers fare worse for neck sprains (19 per cent) than drivers (15 per cent). (What a Pain in the Neck - dotpharmacy.co.uk)

A whiplash injury is caused when the car driving behind you crashes into your rear end. The impact of the two cars colliding throws your body forward so that your neck and shoulders are under your head; your head extends forward and tips down a little. When you slam your foot on the break your head and body fly back in the opposite direction. This vigorous process happens extremely quickly and often results in an injury.

Many people suffer from neck pain or tenderness after an accident but find that these symptoms disappear relatively quickly. Other people are not as lucky and can go on to develop serious neck pain. There are several symptoms of whiplash to look out for. These are often experienced in the days preceding an accident.

o Headaches
o Neck pain
o Back pain
o Shoulder pain
o Ringing in the ears
o Sleeplessness
o Pain in the arms or hands
o Abnormal sensations such as burning or prickling, called paresthesias
o Depression

So what is whiplash?

Whiplash is an injury to the soft tissue in the neck. Areas of the neck which can be affected are the discs and ligaments, cervical muscles, intervertabral joints and the roots of the nerves. Most injury to soft tissue cannot be seen with an x-ray so specialised scans may need to be carried out if symptoms persist into the long term. Treatment for people with whiplash used to involved immobilisation with a cervical collar, nowadays early mobilisation is encouraged instead. A soft collar may be worn but only for short periods at a time. Patients may also need to take pain medication, muscle relaxants and anti-depressants.

How can it be prevented?

According to a recent study by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety in the United States, only eight out of 97 car seats tested went any way to preventing whiplash. It is thought that the height of the head rest is a crucial aspect of preventing injury. The cars that came out top in the tests were.

o The GM brand Saab, the 9-2X and the 9-3
o The Volvo S40, S60 and S80
o The Jaguar S Type.

Drivers should be reminded however that car manufacturers do not have sole responsibility for the prevention of whiplash. Until such a time comes when all vehicles are built with car seats like those in the Saab 9-2X, drivers should take a few steps to protect themselves. A head rest at the correct height for the passenger or driver can reduce the risk of whiplash by around 40-50%. The Insurance Bureau of Canada recommends that the centre of the headrest be slightly above the top of the driver’s ear. The top of the headrest should be at least as high as the top of the driver’s head. Ideally, the distance between the headrest and the back of the driver’s head should be 5-10 cm (2-4 inches).

Whiplash and compensation

If you have been involved in an accident and have sustained a whiplash injury you can normally claim compensation. Liability for the accident is not usually an issue when a driver has rear-ended you. Once the whiplash has been proven by medical reports damages can be claimed for loss of earnings, car damage and any special medical care that you require.

www.car-accident-claim.com provides assistance to people who have been involved in non-fault traffic accidents in the UK. They act quickly to get people back on the road in a replacement car and if people have been injured then Car Accident Adviceline can help them to claim their maximum compensation entitlement.
